Goals galore, penalty shootouts and last-gasp winners – take a look at all the action from the weekend.

As the beginning of the season draws closer, many teams have already begun turning the cogs and bedding new players into their style of play as the Premier Sports Cup continued on Saturday.

Ross County kicked proceedings off in Dingwall as Stuart Kettlewell aimed for another victory in the hope of his team remaining top of their group. Veteran striker Brian Graham bagged himself two goals before Chin added a third for the Staggies against Clyde. The Lanarkshire side did muster a goal through Cameron.

The second match of the afternoon took place even further north in Brora as they hosted League One side Queen of the South. The Dumfriesshire side made no mistake in stamping their authority on the match as goals from Clark and a brace from Smith wrapped up all three points.

Back in Lanarkshire, Hamilton Accies had to dig deep to ensure the bonus point stayed at New Douglas Park as they were forced to a penalty shootout by Raith Rovers. Cameron Blues opened his goalscoring account for Accies to claw them back from a one-goal deficit after Raith’s Lewis Vaughan converted a penalty.

Montrose ran out 2-0 winners in Stirling as goals from Loudon and the ever-reliable Blair Lyons put the fixture just out of reach for Stirling Albion.

Much like Montrose, Inverness Caledonian Thistle were 2-0 victors against Linlithgow Rose as Duncan and Boutin found themselves on the scoresheet.

Saturday proved to be a day of victories across Lanarkshire as John Rankin’s Airdrie comfortably swept aside Annan Athletic with a 3-0 victory. Kian Taylor got his name on the scoresheet alongside a brace from AJ Bridge.

Across the coast in Ayr, Gary Naysmith continued his unbeaten record as Ayr manager as his side edged past Edinburgh City. Owen Stirton, who is on a season-long loan from Dundee United, marked his first home appearance with a goal, while Mitchell also got on the scoresheet.

A five-star East Kilbride performance was marked by an eight-goal thriller against Dumbarton. A first-half hat-trick from Elliott looked to have East Kilbride well on their way, but Dumbarton fought back as McIntosh’s brace and Honeyman’s goal drew the sides level. East Kilbride eventually sealed the game in the closing 10 minutes as O’Connor and McGuffie added goals four and five, securing another three points in the tournament.

Kilmarnock, on the other hand, proved to be far less convincing as they left it until the 95th minute to score the winner against Elgin City. Joe Hugill popped up with the only goal of the game, allowing his side to breathe a sigh of relief.

Championship sides Livingston and Partick Thistle contested a much tighter affair and were another pair forced to settle matters from the penalty spot. Muirhead opened the scoring in the second half before Samuel cancelled it out to bring the tie level. Ultimately, Thistle edged the shootout to claim the bonus point.

In Brechin, Marvin Bartley continued his unbeaten run in Stenhousemuir colours as Anderson and Carrick scored for the visitors, while Hilson’s goal for Brechin did little to trouble Bartley’s side.

The final penalty shootout of the afternoon came in Alloa as the hosts could not be separated from Stranraer. Rankin’s brace for Alloa and goals from Gillie and Quigg for the visitors left the game level before Alloa claimed the bonus point in front of their home support.

Further up the road in Aberdeen, St Mirren looked menacing against Cove Rangers. With four different scorers on the scoresheet – Idowu, Ramos, Douglas and Calvin – St Mirren wrapped up all three points.

Newly promoted Premiership side St Johnstone also put on a display for their home support as three second-half goals were more than enough to secure three points against Greenock Morton. A brace from Gullan and a goal from McAlear prevented any potential blushes for the Perthshire side.

Stephen Robinson’s Aberdeen have been inconsistent since the end of last season, and they were given a run for their money as they took on Queen’s Park. Aberdeen raced into a two-goal lead inside the opening 15 minutes thanks to Happe and Smith, but Queen’s Park ensured a nervy finish by pulling one back through Hamilton. Aberdeen, however, weathered the pressure and held on to claim all three points.

The closing game of Saturday evening came from Dundee as United took on Arbroath. Despite a disappointing defeat to Montrose on Tuesday night, Jim Goodwin’s side responded in convincing fashion, putting three goals past Arbroath with Sapsford, Metsoko and Rose all getting on the scoresheet.

Another successful matchday for some, while others are still clinging on to hopes of reaching the next round. The action continues on Tuesday night, with some intriguing ties on the horizon.
