The charm of the Premier Sports Cup continued on Tuesday night as Premiership teams faltered, six games produced four or more goals, and new signings cemented their place on the scoresheet.

Tuesday night hosted 16 more games across the country in the Premier Sports Cup as both Dundee United and Falkirk lost out, while Dundee and Partick Thistle began to kick on. Every result counts as the teams all vie for their place in the next round.

Neil Lennon’s Dunfermline kicked off proceedings as they cruised to a 4-1 victory over Dumbarton. A player who has become so reliable for the Pars was on the scoresheet not once but twice. Andrew Tod, the young forward, has become a formidable force in front of goal and one to watch throughout the tournament. New striker Oli Shaw also got on the scoresheet, followed by a late contribution from Cooper. Dumbarton could only manage a single goal through Kirkpatrick.

Nearby in Falkirk, the Premiership side may have thought Ayr United would present a somewhat straightforward fixture. However, that proved to be misguided as Holt’s goal made all the difference for Naysmith’s Ayr, who bagged themselves another three points.

Edinburgh City certainly bounced back from their thumping against Falkirk as they ran out 2-0 winners over Alloa Athletic thanks to a Leitch brace.

A carbon copy of that result followed in East Fife as Austin’s brace made all the difference against Championship side Greenock Morton.

Forfar was the venue for some of the evening’s more entertaining action as Partick Thistle dominated with goals from Samuel, O’Reilly, Letsosa, and an own goal from Drozd proving decisive.

On the subject of making a difference, veteran midfielder Graham Webster, who has featured for Montrose since 2013, had the greatest impact on his side’s fixture as they defeated Dundee United thanks to his solitary goal – a night to remember for the Mo!

For a change, derby day came early in Lanarkshire as Clyde and Airdrie battled it out for three points. Ultimately, Connell’s goal for Clyde was enough to ensure the bragging rights remained at New Douglas Park.

Despite a poor end to last season’s campaign, Aberdeen showed much more creativity in attack as they defeated Bora Rangers. While it’s not a result to get overly excited about, it’s a step in a positive direction. A brace from Kevin Nisbet helped Stephen Robinson’s side register their first three points.

After bagging themselves the bonus point on Saturday afternoon, Kelty Hearts could not recreate their previous performance as goals from Queen’s Park’s Connelly and Hamilton left the League One side with too much of an uphill battle to contend with.

They may play in the same league, but that often makes for an interesting watch as teams begin to set out their stall for the season ahead, and Stirling Albion did just that as they breezed past Spartans in a 3-1 win. Goals from McNab, Allan, and McLean wrapped up the three points for the Binos after Whyte’s early opener for Spartans had briefly given the hosts hope.

Cove Rangers faced East Kilbride in one of the tastier games of the evening as five goals were scored across the 90 minutes. A brace from McAllister and a contribution from Barry ensured Cove headed back to Aberdeen with all three points. East Kilbride by no means rolled over for the Aberdeenshire side as Foster’s goal, along with an own goal from Harrington, took the game right down to the wire.

Arguably the most disappointing result of the evening came from the Ayrshire coast as Kilmarnock, who under Neil McCann produced some stellar results last year, struggled to overcome Raith Rovers. The game ended goalless after 90 minutes, with the bonus point still up for grabs, but Killie eventually edged it on penalties.

Turning disappointment into jubilation were Peterhead, who left the Highlands with a victory. Girvan’s goal for Elgin was merely a consolation as Kerr, McGinn, and Ross wrapped up all three points for Peterhead.

The theme of jubilation continued in Linlithgow, but not for the home side, as newly promoted Premiership outfit St Johnstone stamped their authority on the group. Goals from Fotheringham and Paton catapulted them into second place.

A trip to the Borders was on Tuesday night’s agenda for Dundee, and they certainly did not leave empty-handed as a five-star performance left Annan Athletic deflated. Manager Steven Pressley’s side once again looked like a cohesive unit with a genuine attacking threat as Reilly’s brace, along with goals from Bervan, Murray, and Hay, served up three points on a silver platter.

The final match of Tuesday evening took place in Brechin as Livingston had their sights set on all three points, and all three points they would take. Sinclair and Muirhead were both on the scoresheet.

The action may be on pause for now, but it returns this weekend as 16 more teams face off against each other for a coveted place in the next round. Who will be the next side to slay a Premiership team, and do we have a dark horse on our hands?
