The Premier Sports Cup action continued on Tuesday and Wednesday night with more penalty shootouts, last-gasp winners and dramatic second-half comebacks.

Neil McCann’s Kilmarnock kicked things off and once again left it until the second half to stamp their authority over Hamilton Accies. Front man Greg Kiltie scored the only goal of the match.

Clyde were searching for their second win of the group stage as they hosted Annan Athletic, and they found the three points in remarkable style as they ran out 4-1 victors, with all five goals coming inside the first 40 minutes. A first-half hat-trick from Connell got the ball rolling for Clyde before Marley Redfern added a fourth. Roy pulled one back for Annan, but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

On the subject of remarkable comebacks, St Mirren may take top prize. They looked down and out on Tuesday night as they conceded three goals against East Kilbride, courtesy of an Elliott brace, which has now made him the competition’s top scorer, and a strike from McGuffie. However, St Mirren returned to the field as a new team in the second half and conjured a spectacular comeback as Sule, Carr and Phillips levelled the scoring before Dijksteel wrapped up the three points in the 93^rd minute.

Continuing the trend of late winners, Kelty Hearts produced one of their own as they defeated Brora Rangers in a tight contest. Shanley had already bagged a brace for the home side, which had been cancelled out by Wallace and Bunce for Brora, but the Kelty striker still had one magical moment left in him as he scored the winner in the 90^th minute to hand Kelty their first win of the tournament.

The only derby of the evening came in Clackmannanshire as Alloa hosted Premiership side Falkirk. This game was a tense affair as the sides were level after 90 minutes, with goals from Glasgow (Alloa) and Tanser (Falkirk). The bonus point was settled on penalties, when a possibly shocking result was recorded as League One Alloa defeated Falkirk in the shootout to claim the extra point.

The opening few matches were rather enthralling, with penalty drama, late comebacks and last-minute winners, but Raith Rovers against Peterhead brought us back to reality with a less eventful match. Dylan Easton netted the only goal of the game for Raith to give Dougie Imrie’s side the three points.

Travelling further north, Arbroath hosted Montrose, and this time it was the visitors who had all the luck in front of goal as the Gable Endies defeated Arbroath thanks to a brace from Loudon.

Now, this is certainly one of the highest-scoring games I’ve ever witnessed in my lifetime and must be up there in the competition’s history as Livingston thumped, there’s no better way to describe it, Forfar 8-0. This game was not only goals galore, but of the eight goals there were six different scorers. A trialist bagged himself a brace, as did Muirhead, while Sinclair, May, Denholm and Boggan all chipped in with goals.

One of the other high-scoring games from Tuesday night came as Dunfermline Athletic outshone Cove Rangers in a five-goal thriller. Striking partnership Tod and Shaw both secured braces before Cooper added goal number five for Neil Lennon’s side.

It may not have been a high scoring match but 13 penalties were taken as Dundee fans may have been disappointed that they were forced to play for the bonus point against League One opposition, Ross County. County target man Brian Graham pulled a goal back after Dundee’s Robertson had opened the scoring in the 20th minute. The shootout in this match went on for 13 penalties before Ross County clinched the bonus point.

St Johnstone, on the other hand, missed a glaring opportunity to rise to the top of the group as they lost out to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, who scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute thanks to Alfie Stewart. Valakari’s side will have been disappointed not to have at least mustered a point from the game, given how early the decisive goal was conceded.

Marvin Bartley’s Stenhousemuir continued their unbeaten form in the cup as they travelled to Firhill to face Partick Thistle. This game was among the others that finished level before penalties, as goals from O’Reilly and Penman were cancelled out by Thistle’s Smyth and Watt. Stenhousemuir claimed the bonus point in the shootout, boosting their hopes of qualifying for the next round.

East Fife were dominant against Linlithgow Rose as they recorded a 3-1 victory on home turf. A brace from Austin and Slattery’s solitary goal made all the difference despite Berry finding the back of the net for the visitors.

Stranraer, who are yet to record a win in the group stage, will have to wait even longer as they were defeated by Edinburgh City, with goals from Leitch and North handing Edinburgh the three points.

The final game of Tuesday night came from Dundee United as they hosted Spartans. United had begun to build some momentum in their previous match, and they continued that form as they thrashed Spartans 4-0. Rose registered two goals on the evening, Tait netted his first goal for the club, and Sapsford was on the scoresheet once again in a well-rounded performance from Jim Goodwin’s side.

Wednesday night supplied the final game of the midweek fixtures as Aberdeen travelled to Dumfries to take on Queen of the South. On Saturday, Aberdeen had to battle to the end to secure victory, but on Wednesday night they produced a much-improved performance. The Doonhamers took the lead in the first half through Clark; however, that appeared to be the wake-up call the Dons required as they scored four goals in the second half. Striker Kevin Nisbet made his mark with a hat-trick, while Lyons also found himself on the scoresheet to wrap up a far more convincing showing from the visitors.

So far, the group stage has provided all of the drama, and that will continue on Saturday and Sunday as 11 fortunate teams will book their places in the next round. But who will they be? Only time will tell.
