The first victory in front of the Hampden crowd still remains elusive for Scotland as Slovenia claimed all three points on Tuesday night.

Pocognoli made two changes to his side to face Slovenia this evening, with Hendry and Christie coming in for McKenna and Bowie. The Belgian opted again for a 3-5-1-1 formation this evening, with McGinn playing in behind McBurnie.

It was a special night for two Scotland stalwarts as captain Andy Robertson was presented with his 100-appearances jersey from earlier in the week. Billy Gilmour also made his 50th appearance for the country, making him the youngest midfielder to reach such an achievement.

Scotland were hoping for better fortune this time around at Hampden, and they certainly delivered in the first half, but it wasn’t without its trials.

It was the visitors who enjoyed a comfortable spell in the opening exchanges, with vast possession of the ball, multiple shots at goal and an ability to play through Scotland’s attacking formation.

With only three minutes on the clock, Slovenia began to knock on Scotland’s door as Šturm hit the join of the woodwork; however, play was eventually pulled back for a foul on Hendry.

The Slovenians attacked once again as they sliced Scotland open with a sublime passage of play. Čerin was the shot-taker in the end and forced Hendry to block his driven effort on the line.

Scotland, in true fashion, weathered the Slovenian storm and, slightly against the run of play, snatched the lead in the 30th minute. Gannon Doak stood a fantastic cross up at the back post, and it was Hendry who saw his header come back off the bar- Christie was there, though, to cleverly flick the ball into the goal. 1-0.

Scotland looked strong as they closed out the first half. However, whatever was said during the Slovenian half-time team talk clearly worked, as they came out of the traps and battered Scotland in their pursuit of all three points.

Seconds after the restart, a looped ball over the Scotland back line was headed towards the Slovenian striker, who forced Hendry to once again block his shot.

Christie was unlucky not to score with his effort in the 51st minute after a great driving run from Gannon Doak found him.

It only took the visitors five agonising minutes to penetrate the Scotland back line, and it came from virtually nothing. Once again, Scotland were cut open as Matko slotted the ball into the bottom corner. However, questions will be asked of Angus Gunn, as the goalkeeper should really have saved the shot. 1-1.

The Slovenians continued on the offensive as Matko poked the ball home to make it two, but the celebration was short-lived as the referee called for offside, much to the relief of Scotland.

The Scots didn’t heed the warning signs from the visitors as Slovenia edged ahead in the 71st minute. Scotland parted like the Red Sea as Matko raced forward before squaring the ball to Šturm, who tapped it in- dismal defending from Scotland. 1-2.

There weren’t many positives that could be taken from tonight’s tie. However, a first cap for Josh McPake is certainly on the agenda, as he looked threatening when he came on from the bench.

Scotland had two claims for a penalty in quick succession, as both Curtis and McPake appealed for a spot-kick, but it was to no avail.

Tonight’s result leaves Scotland with much to ponder over the course of the next few weeks, with the next Nations League ties coming in November.

As it stands, Scotland sit third in the table with four points. With work still to do, Pocognoli has plenty of time to conjure up a winning formula.
