Another European night at Fir Park, another spine-tingling moment against foreign opposition, a time for the Well fans to bask in the glory of Europe.

The key word for any European night as underdogs is belief, and Fir Park emanates that. From the away stand, which was opened to home fans due to ticket demand, right over to the Davie Cooper Stand, belief was in the air — belief that Motherwell were 90 minutes away from edging one step closer to a Europa Conference League spot.

The Well boys were at the ready with their tifo, the drum rang around the stadium, and the Steelmen put on a show, more so in the second half.

Nobody had quite written off Helsinki; they arguably looked tenacious when they played in Finland in their home fixture last Thursday. Yet, as they ran out at Fir Park, the Finnish side looked nervous. They couldn’t really get a firm foot on the ball, and that began to show.

For the first half, Motherwell dominated. They had plenty of chances to draw ahead, with Said having a few opportunities to open the scoring, while Longelo sliced his volley wide and Maswanhise was giving the defenders the runaround.

Helsinki struggled to make it beyond the halfway line and, when they did, the strong defensive partnership of Girwood-Reich and Moorman snuffed out the danger.

It was still a stalemate at the break, and with only young boys on the bench, Motherwell knew this tie had to be settled in the second half and boy, did they come out of the traps.

Just two minutes into the second half, Said made his mark. The forward received a sublime pass from Moorman and, with work still to do, Said dipped the shoulder and cut past the defenders before unleashing a strike into the bottom corner to send Fir Park into a frenzy.

This was a goal that meant so much to the players, manager and backroom staff, but this goal meant tenfold to the near 8,000 fans who were jumping to their feet at Fir Park. This goal prompted hundreds to begin checking flights to Freiburg.

It was clear the Steelmen weren’t finished yet and, despite Helsinki throwing on their firepower in the form of striker Pukki, they were no match for the burning desire of the Motherwell players.

Said, who had worked tremendously hard all night, reaped the rewards again as he bagged himself a brace. Said received the ball in the centre circle and began rampaging towards goal — the bizarre fact is, Helsinki let him! The defenders continued to back off until it was too late, and he strolled into the box to poke the ball home for 2-0.

Imagine the sheer euphoria from the first goal, with the possibility of play-off football just within reach. Now times that by ten and turn that possibility into reality. For the next 30 minutes, Fir Park bounced and bounced before the referee blew for full time.

One of the best renditions of ‘We’re All Going on a European Tour’ rang around the stadium as fans began to secure their flights or hotels in Freiburg.

For Motherwell, they are one step closer to the Europa Conference League, and where the Steelmen go, the Well boys will follow. All roads lead to Freiburg, and hopefully, a victory!
