The Hearts’ Talent Rangers Can’t Afford to Ignore

They hired the manager, they bagged their number-one striker, but who else could be headed to Rangers from Hearts in the summer transfer window?

There had long been rumblings of Rangers expressing interest in Hearts striker and captain Lawrence Shankland. They allegedly made an approach last year but were unsuccessful. This time around, however, the boyhood Rangers fan couldn’t turn the opportunity away.

The prolific striker joined on an initial two-year deal, with the option to extend it by a further year. He was the man in form at Hearts, scoring a remarkable 20 goals in 34 games across all competitions, and that was despite spending eight league games on the sidelines. Given his form, is it any surprise that Rangers swooped in?

With James Tavernier having departed the Glasgow side, the role of captain has become vacant, and it would surprise few if the former Hearts captain assumed that responsibility. His leadership, commitment and drive, both on and off the pitch, are clear for all to see. Given Rangers looked disconnected last season, could he be the glue that binds it all back together?

After it was announced that Danny Röhl was departing Rangers, there was only one name on everybody’s lips: Derek McInnes. The former Rangers player was the favourite for the job, and that belief came to fruition during the week.

After a bittersweet season at Hearts, he became one of the most sought-after managers in the SPFL. While little consolation can be taken from last season, achieving second place in a league where the big two possess vastly greater financial resources is no mean feat.

McInnes’ record speaks for itself: 21 wins and seven draws in 33 league games. Couple that with not losing a home game all season, and you have a manager who could be exactly what Rangers need.

Rangers need a manager who will play with tenacity, build belief within the squad and gain the backing of the fans. If they are looking for those three vital qualities, then McInnes fits the mould. However, the mammoth question remains: who else will he sign?

Hearts had many standout players last season, but if Rangers are seeking an electric player with versatility in his locker, then look no further than Claudio Braga. The 26-year-old still has plenty of time left to make an impact at Ibrox should Rangers secure his signature.

Last season, he developed a formidable partnership with Shankland, and the pair became a force to be reckoned with in the league. Braga himself scored 17 goals and registered six assists in 44 appearances throughout the campaign.

He reaped the rewards of an impeccable season by being recognised in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, as well as winning the PFA Premiership Player of the Year award.

If Rangers were to raid Hearts, one of the most desirable midfielders to emerge from the Edinburgh side is Cammy Devlin. Though he is now a free agent, he will forever be remembered as an outstanding Hearts player.

Although the Australian doesn’t make the headlines for his goal contributions, his work off the ball is equally important. Devlin goes about his business quietly and never seeks plaudits for his efforts, but one thing is for certain: his work rate and consistency are off the charts. Whoever wins the race for his signature will have bagged themselves a top-quality player.

The final Hearts player who I believe would be a fantastic signing for Rangers is Stephen Kingsley. He may not have been a regular in the starting line-up, but whenever called upon, Kingsley delivered, and his ability should not be overlooked.

On many occasions, he was asked to play across the entire left side of the back line, whether at left-back, left centre-back or, on occasion, left wing. Not once did he perform poorly. This is the mentality Rangers are desperately craving: players who would give every fibre of their being for the team. It’s the missing cog that has been absent for some time now.

If Kingsley, like Braga, were to depart Hearts during the transfer window, he would forever be remembered for his sublime free kick that defeated Hibs in the Scottish Cup semi-final back in 2022.

Although the World Cup may be drawing attention away from club football, Rangers’ key mission is to bring fresh blood through the doors and get the fans believing once again, with the ultimate aim of winning a trophy next season.
